Weather Notifications via ntfy app

Updated with changed topic names.

Weather notifications are available from our Weather Message Server by way of the ntfy App. Notifications are available for the entire FWD County Warning Area (CWA) or geographic areas that are based on the Council of Government (COG) Regions. The COG areas are for those who are not interested in receiving every notification in the entire CWA.

You can use either the ntfy app or a web browser to receive notifications. The app is available from both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. Both the app and web browser versions are configured by subscribing to a topic. Note: Topic names are case sensitive

If you were redirected to this page from the ntfy.wx5fwd.net service, you may have attempted to subscribe to an unknown topic or URL. Continue reading and subscribe to one or more of the listed topics below.

What notifications will you be receiving?

  • Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) – is a product from the local NWS office, for the media and emergency management. This product contains Key Messages regarding the weather for both
  • the short- and long-term period (today and the next 5-7 days).
  • Hazardous Weather Outlook – a weather statement issued to provide information of potential severe weather events within the next seven days. (Note, this product is being phased out, in lieu of the new AFD Key Messages.)
  • Special Weather Statements – issued for hazards that have not yet reached warning or advisory status or that do not have a specific code of their own. Commonly used when radar indicates a strong thunderstorm is producing small hail or high winds whose strength does not reach the criteria to be designated a severe thunderstorm.
  • Severe Weather Warnings – includes warnings issued for Flash Flooding, Severe Thunderstorms, and Tornado Warnings.
  • Winter Weather Notifications – includes watches, warnings, and advisories issued for Blizzards, Blowing Snow, Freezing Rain, Heavy Snow, Ice Storms, Lake Effect Snow, Lake Effect Blowing Snow, Sleet, Snow, Snow and Blowing Snow, Wind Chill, Winter Storm, and Winter Weather.

Be aware there is a known issue with the iOS app where the Notification Screen may not show the correct count of alerts, or tell you there are no alerts. The author is unfamiliar with how to program the screen refresh on iOS. You can try pulling down the screen to see if the screen refreshes. It may or may not.
